Our Story

On April 25th 2022 Derrick Mosley, a 47 year old thin, healthy father of four experienced a widowmaker heart attack after an afternoon jog. His life was saved by his wife, Melissa, as they were on the way to the hospital after Derrick began experiencing chest pains. Melissa pulled the car over when Derrick collapsed less than 2 miles from the hospital and began administering CPR. Only a few seconds later, Ben Chester, an off duty firefighter stopped to assist. Within minutes the Muscle Shoals, Alabama fire and police departments had an AED and LUCAS machine on scene. Derrick was shocked 9 times over the course of the next hour and the LUCAS machine was used on him for 34 minutes providing lifesaving blood flow and oxygen to the brain. All of the acute lifesaving interventions performed roadside before transporting to the hospital. After receiving two stents Derrick made a full recovery. Derrick and Melissa along with their family and friends have established the Lifesaver foundation in an attempt to ensure that every first responder has the equipment they need to save others, just as they saved Derrick that day.
